Strategies to ease traffic woes

PENANG need to create more one-way streets and restrict private vehicles in congested areas, according to the Draft Penang Structural Plan (2005-2020).

Another strategy to be adopted by the state is the introduction of an intelligent transport system including LMT (Light Monorail Transit)
The report said roads in town areas were congested because of high-density development.
The growing population following high-density development in towns has resulted in increase in number of vehicles and transportation demand, the report said.
The report said there were plans to introduce water taxis as an alternative to bring commuters from Penang Island to Seberang Prai, Pulau Aman, Pulau Gedong and man-made islands.
There are also plans to upgrade the Penang International Airport to increase its capacity to accommodate five million passengers annually.
The port and the train transport system to Thailand would also be upgraded.
