Penang aiming for the top in tourism
PENANG has set its mind to become the “Top of the Mind Destination” in the region and efforts are under way to “outfox” its arch rivals Bali, Phuket, Singapore, Hong Kong and even Langkawi.
As part of the Penang Structure Plan, the steps and strategies will subsequently be used in the formulation of local plans to boost the state’s tourism sector.
State Tourism Development Committee chairman Teng Chang Yeow said that among the strategies highlighted in the draft was to make George Town the ‘Northern Region Shopping Centre.’
Teng noted that with the abundance of shopping malls in Penang such as Gurney Plaza, Island Plaza and the upcoming Queensbay Mall, the state should be able to turn itself into a shopping paradise.
“We are going to upgrade the Penang Hill funicular train system, expand the Botanic Gardens and we will open the second oldest lighthouse in the country to the public,” he said.
